Oscar-time is a moment to ignore, in my world: for what is there to celebrate in Tinseltown?
They claim that in Hollywood "you can build a dream out of nothing" (Hugh Jackman claimed so much anyways) - but that is a total and utter lie. For everybody knows that it always takes money to make money; heck, it takes yogurt to make more yogurt out of milk...! That means everything else needs an initial investment too... Hence, evidently, what it means here is that in order to reach a fully-blossomed dream, your dream has to be already half-way there to begin with! Thanks, Tinseltown!
They claim that it is the event of the year - entertainment at its best. And yet, it is so tenuous, abysmally long and sleep-inducing that it boggles the mind...! Will & Jack admitted so much, at least - but it was all in jest, of course... However, as with everything else in Tinseltown, everything has a concealed meaning - everything is hiding something else... And the truth is oftentimes revealed in jest indeed - through wincing teeth!
The worst aspect has to be the heights of hypocrisy reached each and every year when a winner is announced - which automatically announces, also, four-to-five LOSERS. (Nominees or contenders, by any other name...)
Tinseltown, in truth, bears little difference from Sin City - it is a cut-throat, take-no-prisoners, show-no-mercy kinda neighbourhood that takes PLEASURE from the competition's downfall - and why not, since said competition is both fierce and merciless and to be found practically on every corner of the wretched place?
So, what do I do, each and every Oscar night?
I abstain from television altogether!
I do something far more constructive with the long hours otherwise wasted watching this 'ceremony' - I do something good for the environment, beneficial for the greater whole, make myself useful in the kitchen or something...!
For I will not be dictated what movies to watch. I will not be told which thespians are "worthier" and I will not be instructed which filmmakers to follow...
Nominees - schnimpanzees! I care not if the flick has been nominated or not - won it or not - is rated anything from A to Z...!
I WILL DECIDE WHAT SUBJECTS I WANT TO SEE TREATED ON FILM!
I WILL SELECT WHICH PRODUCTIONS I DEVOTE MY PRECIOUS TIME TO!
And I certainly will not waste said time on award shows OF ANY ILK!
The "Academy" is not even a true academy in the true meaning of the word...!!!
Their rating system is flawed to the core!
Whenever they give a chance to new talent, it is a pathway seamed with as many roadblocks and thorns as can be...!
Take *Project Green Light* for instance - have you ever heard of it again, after its inauguration by not one but two precious "Academy Award winners" - huh?
On YouTube, "Oscars" doesn't even make its precious videos -mere excerpts from their insufferably long Oscars night telecasts- available for embedding!
And said events are, once again, but a waste of everyone's time...
Oftentimes, the major winners are not even there to accept the prize - and when they do, they are BORING and repetitive! It's a no-win situation either way!
Not only that, but it can lead to truly odd live television moments - as when a Marlon Brando delegated someone else to take the award, in political protest... Or when the winner simply refuses the award, on the spot, also in protest!
The Oscars, as they came to be known, are quite simply all glitz and gaffes!
The only saving grace of such things are the comedy bits - but, if you truly want to laugh, you'll leave it to the professionals over at Comedy Central to tickle your funny bone, no?!?
Many action or "dramatic" actors are simply not suitable to entertain us that certain way...!
Yet they still persist, on top of the comedy bits, and even insist on having DANCE AND SONG numbers as well...
Yikes!
Aren't musicals a dead issue in Hollywood - or is the latter trying to be like Bollywood now? Funny if it is the case because, just a few short years ago, the emulating was the other way around, of course...
Musicals are not making a comeback, like westerns did, I hope?
Since most of the truly meaningful *Academy Awards* are given away off-camera, during the previous night "dark ceremony" (makes the Academy sound like a cross between the Illuminati and the Freemasons!) why not save everyone's time and simply mail ALL the Awards to their recipients - WITHOUT A SHOW AT ALL!
The Oscars would actually gain in CREDIBILITY, I tell you...!
Since the on-the-spot reactions of any winner -even the most gifted actor- suck royally (take Tom Hanks' disappointing speech in 1995 - disappointing to all save Rita Wilson - as an example...) and the subsequent display of hypocrisy from the other nominees is unbearable to watch (in that same example, watch Paul Newman's smiling effort; he knew it was his last chance, and he lost, and he mustered all of his acting skill NOT to show his disappointment that night...) thus it stands to reason to completely stop that nonsense already.
Purists will say "but it's tradition"...
HA. "Movies" or "talkies" have only been around since the beginning of the 20th Century - that is NOTHING!
CENTURIES-OLD FOLKLORIC DANCES, RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS, RITUALISTIC CULTURAL GATHERINGS IN COUNTRIES MUCH OLDER THAN AMERICA - NOW THAT IS TRADITION!
Tinseltown is just a phase human-folk has been going through, in comparison...
So keep it in that perspective; think outside the box that the entertainment industry has cast around your head!
You don't have to go watch every summer blockbuster they put out!
You don't have to believe any hype generated by Awards that were, will be or might have been won - in any way!
You are not obligated to support the lifestyles of these bloated egos who flock to Cannes and the Hills, and frown upon you and your folk since all they want is your money!
And you don't have to buy any of the crap that they are selling!
In short, you have the right to say no to Oscar - since he practically is begging for it!
That is simply the luminous thing to do - lest it is the luculent one?
;-)
